In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
