Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Again' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with President Gustavo Petro have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening tensions bilaterally after American military units struck Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He runs cocaine mills and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Escalating Threats coupled with Claims

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, the American leader suggested analogous military action towards the South American nation, claiming the nation faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who enjoys creating narcotics and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

The country was historically a key ally of the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing from American politicians, however, the relationship have deteriorated markedly following Trump was elected.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms subsequent to a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether military intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered regarding Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who left armed struggle in the last century, rejected Trump's claims. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become thousands of guerrillas in the hills. And should they arrest the president, whom many of the country holds in high esteem, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in drafting a new constitution over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election president.

"I made a vow to abstain from using a gun ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Opposition

The Colombian defence minister announced that Petro's security detail was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have denounced the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Strains

Washington revoked his travel authorization after he called on US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. Later, in October, authorities imposed asset freezes on Petro, the first lady and a number of key allies.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the region and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed attacks on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
